The Damaru Empowerment

When I first set out to create this empowerment, I did so as a way to make the powerful
ritual of chöd more accessible to my apprentices. However, over the course of my work
with it, I decided that this energy should be made available to everyone. So let's start with what a Damaru actually is.
The skull damaru, also known as the kapala damaru, is a unique and mysterious
percussion instrument with a rich cultural and spiritual significance. It is primarily
associated with Tibetan Buddhism, where it is used in ritual practices and ceremonies.
The skull damaru is made from two human skull caps, which are fixed top to top and
fitted with a drumhead made from animal skin or wood.
The skull damaru is often adorned with intricate designs and symbolic elements, such
as carved images of deities, mantras, or sacred symbols. It is believed that the use of a
human skull in the construction of the damaru gives the instrument a special energy and power, connecting it to the divine and spiritual realms. The skull damaru is considered a sacred object and is treated with reverence and respect by practitioners.
In Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the skull damaru is associated with the wrathful deity
Mahakala, who is a fierce and protective manifestation of compassion. Mahakala is often depicted holding a skull damaru in one of his hands, symbolizing his power to
destroy obstacles and conquer negative forces. The sound of the damaru is believed to
awaken and energize spiritual energies, purify negative influences, and invoke
blessings from the divine.
The skull damaru is played by holding the handle and rapidly twisting the wrist back and
forth, causing the drum to produce a rhythmic and pulsating sound. The unique shape
and material of the damaru create a distinct quality of sound, with a resonant and penetrating tone that is said to transcend the physical world and reach the spiritual
realms. The skull damaru serves as a potent symbol of impermanence, reminding individuals of the transient nature of existence and the ultimate liberation from suffering.
