The Magick of Tattoos

A common trait found in a lot of the Magickal community is the tendency to get occult themed tattoos. Some of these are purely decorative, but some serve great mystical purposes. Today, we will look at some of these.

The Sak Yant

The the most common sort of mystical tattoo is the Sak Yant, or the Thai Magick Tattoo. These are used for a variety of purposes, but done in the same manner. Always stick and poke, and always done by high level monks called Ajarns, these potent tattoos are empowered with formulas and prayers to give them strength. Commonly, they are done for protection, but they have many other purposes. It is important to note that unless you have this done in the traditional manner, it's just a tattoo. It is not a sak Yant proper, no matter how good you think you are at empowering things.

Sigils

Sigils are often used for various purposes. Most of the ones I have seen are for protection, empowerment, or even to 'store' the echoes of ritual to call them up again at any time. Sigil tattoos are also used to connect to different energies and bring those forth in the Bearers life.

Deity tattoos

Tattoos honoring your deities are extremely common. They often serve no bigger purpose than devotion, but by association also often bring great blessings and protection to those that have them.

Demon tattoos

I do not condone this practice, as it can lead to a lot of unintended consequences, but it is not uncommon for folks to have demon sigils tattooed on their body. This serves as a direct line to that spirit, and can be used for quick summoning and communication, as well as other things.

Servitor tattoos

These are a little easier to handle in my opinion. Linking a servitor to a tattoo is a great way to keep your servants on hand for easy access. This can be used for a number of servants, but early warning systems and protectors are some of the best choices.

Totemic tattoos

Probably my favorite sort of tattoo, these tattoos bring forth the energy of the totem you've chosen. One prominent example of this is Brother Peter Aziz. He has tiger stripes tattooed on his shoulders that bring forth the strength and ferocity of the tiger. This is an ancient practice, and one of the best in my opinion.

Now, I do not personally bear any ink. Instead, I draw various sigils as I need them in India ink or permanent marker. However, I do have some planned, including a sak Yant when the time is right. Some of the empowered ink I intend to acquire is: a set of Naga scales on one shoulder to bring their protection and power, an eye sigil linked to a watcher servitor to gather intelligence and watch for attacks, the seal of the Red Hand, and a special tattoo linked to the essence of Hades and Persephone. These are just a few, but they may give you some inspiration as well. Of course, you can always go my current direction and use temporary inks for temporary seals, which is a powerful practice all by itself. Regardless, it is always good to know that you have options!
